Optical migraine, also better known as retinal migraine, is a neurological syndrome and one of those rare migraines in which the patient does not experience any kind of headaches, be it severe or mild.
However, it also true that patients who suffer from optical migraines are also susceptible to developing classical migraines, complete with headaches, pains, and all the other associated symptoms. The typical optical migraine symptoms are nausea, presence of migraine aura, hemiparesis, and photophobia.
While the exact cause of retinal migraines is unknown, research has been able to identify some of the essential causes of this condition. These are
- Excessive consumption of alcohol
- Improper food habits in which the patient may not have adequate amounts of food, leading to frequent hunger pangs
- Excessive stress and tension in life
- Among women the causes could be changes in menstrual cycles or used of contraceptive pills.
There are certain kinds of foods that can trigger an optical migraine. Some of the foods that can cause potential trouble are aged cheese, chicken liver, chocolates or products with caffeine, meats preserved in nitrates, and foods that contain MSG, or monosodium glutamate.
Another cause of retinal migraines can be excessive exercises and exposure to strong sunlight. In addition to this any activity that places undue strain on the eyes can also be counted among optical migraine causes. This would include watching too much television, reading late into the night in dim lights, and working at the computer for extended periods of time.
Like I said before, identifying all the optical migraine causes is a tough job, especially since there are no headaches associated with this condition. In most cases, it is only when the optical migraine transforms into a condition of classical migraines that you discover that you were suffering from migraines in the first place. This transformation can be brought about by sudden hormonal changes in the body of the patient, too much stress, hypersensitivity to pollution, noise, and odors, excessive intake of caffeine, dieting, and low blood sugar.
